BS/MS degree in Life Science/Technical Discipline
Minimum 1 year in a general business management, project management, or process improvement/ Lean Six-Sigma role
Minimum 2 years in a role working closely with pharmaceutical development
Comfortable with basic accounting and financial principles and practices
Evidence of flexible thinking specifically the ability to develop multiple options based on differing perspectives
Effective multi-format interpersonal and communication skills
Ability to work independently on multiple assignments
Excellent computer skills with proficiency in core business driven Microsoft applications (Excel, Project , Outlook, Office Communicator, LiveMeeting and Sharepoint)
Preferred qualifications:
Globally accredited MBA or equivalent experience in financial management, business management, and/or project management
Demonstrated interpersonal awareness and personal impact
Lean Sigma White Belt Certification or equivalent experience identifying and implementing business process improvements
Experience in a biopharmaceutical process and product development
Proven experience in influencing and rational persuasion
Excellent computer skills with proficiency in other Microsoft applications (Access, Powerpoint, Word, Visio)

Organizationally located in the Biopharm CMC, Biopharmaceutical Development (BPD) is a diverse group that is responsible for delivering processes, methods and products from First Time in Human (FTIH) through commercial launch via a balance of scientific excellence and dedication to delivering on projects at the helm. The BPD Business Operations (BusOps) team champions the business processes that enable the scientific and project work to be conducted effectively and efficiently.
The BPD BusOps team represents the voice of our lines in business planning within the CMC as well as across the GSK organization to the various business development, project management, finance, and legal groups as well as our key external suppliers and collaborators.
The main deliverables are broken up into two groups of activities; financial management and strategic support.
Financial Management
The BPD Bus Ops team institutes ways of working for managing internal expenditure (IPE ~£18M), capital expenditure (CAPEX ~£2M) and external expenditure (EPE~£80M). For IPE, the BusOps teams works with Biopharm R&D Finance to deliver and improve upon summary and transactional data reporting and determines the basis for the IPE forecasting algorithms. The Bus Ops team also plays a key role in identifying areas for improving “the bottom line” through profit and loss (P&L) savings analysis and return on investment (ROI) proposals. For CAPEX, the Bus Ops team facilitates the acquisition of capital equipment by reviewing priority across the lines and assigning capital authorization numbers (CANs) to approved items. For EPE, the Bus Ops team governs the forecasting process by establishing base case models and figures for standard work packages and entering the BPD team members’ current estimates into the financial systems for budget approval. The Bus Ops team is also responsible for identifying accruals and defining and improving upon summary and transactional data reporting for the budget holders on all project teams in the Biopharm portfolio (>40 programs).
Strategic Support
The BPD Bus Ops team creates and manages the headcount models, figures and assumptions that form the basis of short term and long term planning in the Biopharm Unit for strageic growth as well as for project-specific deliverables. Subsequently, the Bus Ops team owns the Effort Tracking guidelines, coding and analysis for the work packages that represent BPD. Linking the resources models, the actual effort expended, the recruiting plans and strategies, and the onboard resource tracking together provides BPD with a complete picture of resource utilization that determines the current and future needs in terms of growth of and focus for the organization.
Strong customer focus and excellent organizational skills pursuant to working in global teams
The Operations Analyst on the BPD Bus Ops team is the lead member in championing all of the strageic management systems and processes on behalf of the group taking direction from the Manager and the Senior Operations Analysts. In addition to the Strategic initiatives, the Operations Analyst will also be responsible for EPE management for assigned programs. By 2015, Biopharmaceuticals will make up at least 20% of the GSK portfolio which provides the Operations Analyst with a view of the corresponding financial investments and strategic plans GSK will make in the Biopharm Unit.
